The
Healthy Schools Initiative was created in response
to the unhealthy environmental conditions in Camden
Schools. SJEJA has been documenting issues with polluted
water, toxic air, and lead paint and other environmental
hazards. The project consists of educating school administrators,
teachers, custodians, parents, and children of how
to avoid many of chemical exposure. The initiative
consists of focus groups, educational workshops, and
the wide distribution of educational materials, incl.
test kits for lead paint. |

Petty Island |
| |
Although Petty Island is an island in the Delaware
river off the coast of Camden City, it is echnically
part of Pennsauken. Petty Island now holds a defunct
oil terminal and an active shipping firm. Citgo Petroleum,
which owns the island of 300-plus acres, wants
to give the site to the State, after an environmental
clean-up, for use as a nature preserve. However, Pennsauken
officials have unveiled a $1.3 billion plan to put 1,000
homes and a golf course on the island. Petty Iisland
has been a contested battleground ever since. Citgo,
SJEJA and
other environmental groups, including the Sierra Club,
are fighting to preserve the island as a nature preserve
and the Camden City African American Commission has an
additional vision for the island: Native
American and African American historical landmark.
The
environmentalists found a huge array of wildlife, including
a bald eagle on the island and argue that we need more
green acres and open space in New Jersey. The Camden
City African American Commission discovered
that the island had been an early settlement for Native
Americans and a slave-trade depot in the 17th century.
With the help of Scribe,
they produced a film about the history of the island.
The 15 min. film is narrated by actor, Danny
Glover. >>> read
